"Paige?" My best friend Cindy asked.
"Yeah?" I replied. We were headed to the small diner, Sam's, in our small town,Fairfield . Fairfield isn't really town, it's an academy,
but with the size of the grounds and the amount of students and staff, it minds
well be its own town.
"Do you like Will?" Cindy's question threw me for a loop. Like him? Of course I do. We have been friends since I started coming two months ago. Cindy and I go way back. She is the reason I begged my parents to send me here, instead of this other school inNew York . But
back to my thoughts on Will.
"What do you mean, of course I like him." I decided to tell her.
"No! Do you like like him?" She tried again. This would take more time to answer. I wasn't really sure myself, see, Will was great. And I know I could like him, but do I?
"I don't know..." I say.
"Yes you do, just tell me if you would date him."
"Whoa! That's two completely different questions!" I shoot back.
"Answer them both." She tells me.
"Well... Yes. Yes to both, that is, if he ever asks me out. I mean, it's amazing he even knows I'm alive." I decide. Cindy shoots me a mischievous grin and pulls out her bedazzled cell, flipping it open and typing in a message quickly. "You can't tell him!" I whisper-shout.
"I won't!" Cindy reassures me as we walk into Sam's. As soon as the doors shut softly behind us, I try my hardest to fade into the woodwork. "Look! I see Will and Jacob, in the far booth!" Cindy says, waving in their direction. Jacob is Cindy's boyfriend, they have been going about a year now. Cindy crosses right through the middle of the crowded diner to sit with the guys. I trail along behind her, eyes downcast and nervousness filling my being, just like whenever I am about to talk to anyone but Cindy.
"Hey." Jacob says, getting up and letting Cindy slide into the double wide vinyl both first. Will mimes the gesture and I have no option but to oblige.
"Thanks." I whisper. I can see the funny glance Will gives me before the others continue in their conversation. Jacob and Cindy do most the talking. The whole time, I keep catching Will glancing my way, only to blush and look away when I caught his gaze. Cindy texts under the table and I hear Will's phone vibrate. He checked the message and promptly replies, setting Cindy's phone off. I wonder what the big deal is, they are right across from each other. Even with the mysterious exchange, Cindy and Jacob manage to keep the conversation moving. After we eat, we probably... I mean they probably sit and talk another thirty minutes. I mostly just nod and smile on queue.
"Alright, wanna head out, Cindy?" Jacob asked.
"Sure." She smiled. She gave me a "don't leave right away, I want a moment alone" look and I smiled, letting her know the message was received. The couple walked off, leaving me here, alone, with Will. He is just as shy as I am. Well, maybe not as shy because he starts up a conversation as soon as the other two are out of sight.
"So... how have you been?" He asks.
"Umm... Alright, you?" I can hardly hear myself.
"This is probably stupid, but... Paige... would you like to go to the movies together or something?" He asks bravely. I am shocked, amazed, embarrassed, and well, let's admit it, over the moon happy.
"Y-yea-ah. Uh-um, yeah I'd e-en-joy that." I stutter. Oh! Why can't I just talk normally like every other highschoolers on campus. Even WILL didn't stutter! I can feel my cheeks burning.
"Could, I mean, wanna walk back to my, no... the, no... Can I walk you to your dorm?" He asks, correcting his grammar under his breath. I smile inside, he is just as nervous as I am.
"Sure." I manage to get out. As we walk that way, I suddenly understand the questions from Cindy and the under-the-table texts at Sam's. Was Will asking about me? It seems crazy, but fits the scenario well. We stop In front of the doors to my room.
"See ya tomorrow." He says, turning and giving me a casual salute as he walks off into the night.
'I hope so.' I think to myself. I really hope so.
Cindy is sitting on the bottom bunk, her rightful bed, in our dorm. "How did it go?" she squeaked as soon as I entered.
"Okay, I mean, he only asked if I want to hang out sometime." I tell her. I must have killed her, not being there every second.
"Yes! Our scheme worked!" She cheered.
"Our?" I ask.
"Yeah, me, Jacob and eventuality Will. Jacob knew Will liked you, has since he saw you, and I felt bad, you not having a date for the dance in a few weeks, so, we cooked up a brilliant idea!"
"Since when?"
"Um... maybe about three weeks-"
"No, how long did you say he had liked me for?" I interrupt. I don't care That Cindy overstepped her bounds once again as much as I do about this small fact.
"Oh, he said he liked you since he first met you." I feel dizzy. I sit down on my desk chair, trying to take it all in.
"Wow." I whispered, stunned.
"You're surprised! He's been fawning over you since day one!" Cindy said loudly.
"Shh!" I giggled, "you'll get us in trouble!"
"Well it's true!" Cindy retorted, not making much effort to be quite.
The next day, Friday, is a free day on campus. I walk along the crooked sidewalk in one of the far off, mostly unused corners of the campus. I think I'm alone, well, at least till I trip over a deep crack in the cement and fall right into someone's arms. It's Will.
"I, I didn't see you there!" He whispers, surprised.
"S-ss-sorry.." I manage.
"Hey, want to take me up on that offer? We could go to Sam's, if you want to..."
"T-tt-that sounds great." I say, not really knowing how to reply. Will smiles and I feel a sparkle inside me. It's like he is making me shine. I love that feeling.
